Your living room is probably where your guests, friends, and family spends a large amount of their time while in your home. Don't let it get boring! Your physical environment influences your mood, feelings, and productivity every day. Create a space that you enjoy seeing on a daily basis and can be excited to bring friends over to.

1.) An interesting lighting fixture

Take a badly lit area and transform it completely using strategic lighting. You can highlight the corner of a room with a reading lamp or draw eyes to a gallery wall with light fixtures. A large fixture can even serve as a focal point if you place it correctly. You can even create a specific mood or theme by using different colors in your lighting - purple and red lighting have especially intense effects.

2.) Art for your blank walls

Blank walls are sad and boring. Art doesn't have to be expensive! Get creative with your wall space by framing a treasured item and displaying it. Make a gallery of family photos to hang above the couch. There are so many things that you can do with wall space - check out this list of ideas for creating a stunning gallery wall that will serve as a focal point for your living room.

3.) The right tech equipment

Do you still have cable? You might be doing it wrong. Save money and diversify your entertainment options by using services like Netflix, Hulu, and YouTube TV through something like Apple TV or a similar device. A device like this will set you back the equivalent of one to two months of the average cable bill and you'll have it forever. Make sure that you can hear everything clearly and create your ideal home theater by investing in a soundbar and other high-quality audio pieces for your setup. If you're used to using the speakers on your TV, you'll be amazed at the quality difference that comes with upgrading your audio setup.

4.) A conversational piece

What's a conversational living room piece? That depends on you and your interests. Avoid awkward and silent visits to your home by featuring an item or two in your living room that guests will just have to ask you about. Do you enjoy music? Then your ideal conversational piece may be an impressive record collection or a wall-mounted instrument. Are you a history buff? Try an oversized sculpture of your favorite historical figure. Most conversational pieces don't serve a functional purpose, but it's possible to find one that does. For example, a looming bookshelf full of treasures you've collected from around the world would serve this purpose as well as provide a home for your books and assorted finds.

5.) A fun, stylish accent chair

Break up the monotony of your living room and introduce more seating for guests at the same time by including an accent chair. Especially if your living room set is a solid, neutral color, this is a great way to add a vibrant pop of color or a bold pattern into your space without creating an overwhelming effect. An especially comfortable accent chair may turn out to be your new favorite reading spot.

6.) Patterned or textured throw pillows

For a simple and cost-effective way to recreate your living room's style, try snagging a few new throw pillows! Whether you're looking to make over the entire room with a new theme or you're trying to switch things up for a season, throw pillows are a good place to start. You can try out new patterns and styles inexpensively before committing to the total style overhaul that is buying a new living room set. Maybe you have a classic microfiber living room set and you'd like to create a living room with an earthy, resort-type feel. Buy accent pillows in a batik pattern or with crochet or tassel detailing to try out the style before you commit. Have a boring couch and just want to add a little bit of character to your living space? Find some fun, coordinating patterns and solids to place on your couch for an instant living room upgrade.

Try out some of these ideas to make small or large changes to your living space. It's incredible what changing up your living area can do to shape your everyday mood and daily experience. Your home should be a place that you thoroughly enjoy and look forward to relaxing, working, and playing in. If it isn't, try brainstorming what your ideal living room would look like and use this list to start making changes!
